LOS ANGELES ACHIEVES LED ENLIGHTENMENT
Bureau of Street Lighting Selects MS-ST-70 for Phase II Field Testing

Los Angeles, October 14, 2009. — LED Enlightenment, a leader in energy efficient lighting systems, announced today that its MS-ST-70 single-module LED street light has passed initial testing by the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting and been selected for Phase II field testing. Four (4) MS-ST-70 luminaires have been installed on a residential street in the Hollywood area.

“We are very pleased that the City of Los Angeles has chosen the MS-ST-70,” said Deborah Gabbai, president of LED Enlightenment. “We believe it will prove to be the most energy-efficient instrument on the market, while providing clear, beautiful, glare-free lighting for the residents of Los Angeles.”

Currently, the City’s 140,000 street lights use 168 gigawatt hours of electricity at an annual cost of over $15 million, while emitting 120,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The LED Street Lighting Efficiency Program is intended to reduce energy usage by at least 40%, reducing CO2 emissions by at least 40,500 ton annually (the equivalent of taking 6,700 cars off the road). Supported by funds from the Clinton Climate Initiative, the program intends to replace all 140,000 street light fixtures over the next five years.

“With the green street light program, we are lighting the way to a greener LA,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at a press conference first announcing the program in February 2009. In addition, said the Mayor, “we’ll save money on energy costs and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”

To be completed within five years, the project is funded through a combination of energy rebates, the street lighting assessment fund and loans, which will be repaid over seven years entirely through savings in energy and maintenance costs. In the eighth year, after the loan is repaid, the City will save $10 million annually through the more efficient and modern LED lighting.

The four MS-ST-70 fixtures are currently installed on Eleanor St. in Hollywood between El Centro Ave. and Gower St. A map of all the phase II test installations are accessible on the BSL website (LED Enlightenment is identified on this map as “Manufacturer #2”).
